Bill Gates leadership style possesses transactional leadership traits as well. The transactional leadership style assumes that people do things for compensation, rewards, or any material outcomes. Therefore, transactional leaders focus on designing tasks around reward structures, such as promotions, bonus payments, etc.
What makes Bill Gates a transactional leader is, that he is not adaptive to communication and employee engagement. He is referred to as one of the famous autocratic leaders as well. To keep track of his team, Gates visits them and asks challenging questions. He keeps asking until he is satisfied. Some even refer to him to be dismissive of others’ ideas.
Gates has demonstrated the importance of clarity of thought and execution for nearly 30 years now. Bill Gates leadership style focuses on two pillars of transactional leadership:

Democratic leadership is also known as participative leadership. Bill Gates leadership style shows the traits of participative leadership style. Being autocratic and participative at the same time may be confusing. However, Gates asked for the ideas of his team members and valued the group participation. However, in many cases, he was following his own decisions even if the outcome of the group participation was the opposite.
In the participative leadership approach, the leader fosters group participation in decision-making processes, although the final words might be told by the leader. The level of participation in participative leadership depends on the leader. Democratic leadership style is considered when a consensus is important to get team buy-in. Note that, if there are several differing ideas in the team, it might be difficult to manage and reach a conclusion.
Even if the participative leader has the final say on decisions, team members are involved in the decision-making process. This builds trust and good working relationships, and team members feel empowered and engaged with their work. You depend on your group to develop ideas, not just offer opinions on an idea. Task-oriented leadership or task leadership is a management style that focuses on the timely completion of tasks and projects with the required quality levels. Therefore, task-oriented leaders focus on goals, objectives, and deadlines and make sure there are sufficient processes and procedures to reach the goals. Bill Gates leadership style demonstrates the characteristics of a task-oriented leadership style.
Great leaders value group participation, knowledge-sharing, and discussion. However, task-oriented leaders decide on their own, based on their insights and experience. They ask no questions, or minimum questions to their team members. They order the team and expect the team to follow them with little or minimum questions. The primary concern of the task-leadership is finishing tasks on time without compromising from quality.
The backbone of the task-oriented leadership style is rewards and penalties. Leadership clarifies its expectations from the beginning with a clear set of goals and targets. Rewards and penalties policies are also declared to the team. While objectives are met, rewards are given to those who deserve them. If there are underperformers or unwanted behavior, the task-oriented leader will not hesitate to punish them.
